stable to rule out neoplastic disorders. The dog's neurological status should also be
assessed for signs of a polyneuropathy. It is common at SouthPaws for both the surgery and
neurology services to assess these dogs before any definitive treatment is performed.
There are several types of surgery available for laryngeal paralysis. The most successful
surgery, and the one that is almost exclusively performed at SouthPaws, is arytenoid
lateralization, or laryngeal tieback. This surgery involves a lateral approach to the
larynx to expose the muscular process of the arytenoid cartilage. Typically, this is
done on the left side of the neck. The cartilage is freed from its attachment, pulled
laterally and caudally, and sutured to the caudodorsal aspect of the cricoid cartilage to
maintain this position. Doing this will pull the left vocal fold off to the side which
