1999 Tech Tips
Norman Scarbrough, LVT
As licensed veterinary technicians, we are fortunate to be able to care for
the best patients in the world - our pets! In order to provide better care
for our patients, veterinary hospitals and large veterinary referral centers
like SouthPaws increasingly use more and more advanced technology to monitor
and treat them. In the midst of all these machines with their bells and
whistles, however, I find that the best care often arises from diligence in
paying attention to the basics. Being on the front lines of patient care,
simple things like picking up on a change in respiratory rate early can head
off big problems later: 1) Watch for the little things like pulse deficits,
changes in pupil size, or just a subtle change in the pet's personality when
handled; 2) Listen to you patient's "voices" - all those communications pets
give us from a tail wag to a growl help us better interpret their status and
needs; 3) Be the "interpreter" for your patient by telling the veterinarian
what your patient is telling you right away.
