Editor's Note: The Role of the Oncologist in the Treatment of Cancer

Cancer is increasingly a topic of public interest, discussed in ever more detail in today's news. The treatment of pets with cancer has also recently come more into the public eye as the war on cancer rages on. It was in no small part due to the sustained demands of the public to apply the startling advances in cancer detection and treatment to their pets that in 1988 the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine approved the residency program requirements of a new veterinary specialty: oncology.

As medical professionals, we are often called upon to clarify thc particulars of diagnosing and treating cancer in our client's pets. With an ever more powerful array of tools to fight cancer, thc veterinary oncologist is an indispensable resource for the progressive veterinarian. The oncologist should be viewed as a vital hub connecting validated diagnostic results with the multiple therapy alternatives available for each specific patient. Using their extensive training and experience, thc oncologist becomes a partner of the surgeon, thc radiologist, thc internist, and the generalist, guiding and advising the multiple disciplines, which must act together in a coordinated fashion to achieve the best treatment outcome.

SouthPaws Veterinary Referral Center is very fortunate to have on staff the only board-certified veterinary oncologist in the state of Virginia. Her knowledge and skills are an indispensable part of our Center's ability to effectively diagnose and treat cancer. Dr. Sarah Sheafor can lift the level of care for your client’s pet with cancer, too. Please fell free to contact her for oncology consultation and referral. Her direct phone line is 703-451-3635.
