History
Founded in 1995 by three left handed veterinarians who had a dream to offer
the best in specialty veterinary medicine to the veterinarians, pets and pet
owners of the Greater DC Area, SouthPaws has always strived for “all-under-one-roof”
compassionate, multidisciplinary, and comprehensive specialty and emergency
care.
What is specialty veterinary medicine?
Specialty veterinary medicine encompasses major, life-threatening,
challenging or difficult health problems in pets. Specialists undergo two to
four years of advanced training following completion of their veterinary
medical doctoral degree. They then
complete rigorous qualification
procedures and examinations by their specialty examining board and college in
order to be called “specialists”.
SouthPaws Today
SouthPaws has grown to
include
fifteen board-certified veterinary specialists providing
care in our surgery, oncology (cancer care), internal medicine, radiology,
neurology/neurosurgery, ophthalmology, holistic
medicine/acupuncture, and rehabilitative therapy departments. Our Criticare
department offers twenty-four hour admissions for urgent, critical or
emergency patients, and provides continuous
inpatient
care including all weekends, and
holidays. Criticare is
staffed by veterinarians and veterinary nurses at all times. Our specialty departments are available Monday through Friday
by appointment. Our specialists are on call to our Criticare department if
urgent or emergency specialty services are needed.
SouthPaws is pleased to offer the best in medical technology to our
patients. Two ultrasound machines, ECGs,
neuroelectrodiagnostics, complete endoscopy services, laparoscopy, digital
radiography, digital fluoroscopy, linear accelerator for megavoltage and
